PREPARING FOR SURGERY
What medications & medical conditions should I notify my Physician and Surgical Center about?
Please talk to your physician about any daily medications you currently are taking, especially for heart, diabetes or blood pressure problems. Be sure to mention any over the counter drugs such as aspirin, diet pills, Bufferin, Nuprin, Advil, Motrin, or vitamins. At your pre-op visit, you will receive instructions concerning which medication you should take the morning of surgery. In addition, please contact us if you have any of the following medical conditions:
* Latex allergy or latex sensitivity
* Diabetes
* Heart conditions
* Kidney or liver failure
* Pregnancy
* If you have been feeling ill lately (cold, fever, cough, or other concerns)
* If for any reason you cannot keep your scheduled surgery appointment
Why should I fill prescriptions my Physician has given me before I have my surgery?
After your procedure, you may be tired and groggy and may not be up to a trip to the pharmacy. Filling your prescriptions beforehand will be easier on you and you will have pain medications on hand when you need them.
What should I wear the day of my procedure?
You will be provided a surgical gown during your procedure. Please wear loose, simple, comfortable clothing and comfortable walking shoes. Leave all jewelry and contacts at home. Please keep in mind what you are having done and bring the appropriate clothes. For example, for shoulder surgeries, loose button-up shirts are best, for leg surgeries, loose shorts or pants are recommended. Whichever site you are having worked on, wear something that will facilitate a bandage, cast or other type of dressing. If you are having a colonoscopy or endoscopy, comfortable street clothes are fine. And please remember to leave all valuables at home.
How should I get there?
For your safety and protection, you will not be allowed to drive a motor vehicle when discharged. If your surgery involves a general anesthetic or sedation, please arrange for a responsible person to remain at the center during your surgery and to provide transportation for you after your procedure. If the patient is a child, it is best to have someone along with the driver to help care for the child on the trip home. If you require we can also provide courtesy transportation to facilitate your transportation needs, so please contact our Scheduling Department at (973) 782-4202.
